Tile Calculator
Estimate the tiles you need for a rectangular area.
How the Tile Calculator Works
A simple estimate to help you plan before ordering materials.
Calculation method
We divide the rectangular surface area by the physical tile face area (without grout), round up to whole tiles, then apply your waste allowance to the rounded tile count. We round up again to whole tiles and full boxes. Grout joints are shown for planning but are not subtracted from the tile purchase estimate. This conservative area-based method does not simulate a cutting layout.
Example: A 4 m × 3 m room with 60 cm × 30 cm tiles and 3 mm grout joints requires 67 tiles before waste, 74 including 10% waste, or 10 boxes of 8 tiles. Always confirm the manufacturer's stated coverage, tile pattern, cuts, breakages and actual room shape before purchasing.
Important: This is an area-based estimate, not a cutting layout. Small rooms, narrow strips, diagonal layouts, niches and complex patterns may require extra tiles. Costs exclude adhesive, grout, labour, delivery and taxes. Currency selection changes the displayed currency only; it does not convert prices at exchange rates.
Frequently asked tile questions
How do I calculate tiles for a floor? Multiply floor length by width, then divide by the area of one tile using matching units. Round up to whole tiles and include a waste allowance for cuts and breakage. This tool performs those steps and rounds the final quantity up to full boxes.
Should I allow 10% extra tiles? Ten percent is a useful starting assumption for straightforward layouts, but diagonal patterns, awkward edges and complex room shapes may need more. Confirm the allowance with your installer and tile supplier.
Does grout spacing reduce the number of tiles? This calculator uses the tile face area for a conservative material estimate and does not reduce the result for grout gaps. It is not a row-by-row cutting plan.
Can I calculate wall tiles too? Yes. Enter the rectangular wall dimensions as the area length and width, excluding areas you do not intend to tile. For several sections, calculate each one separately.
Does the currency selector exchange pounds for dollars? No. Enter the actual local price per box. The selector only changes how the cost is displayed.
